Ride sharing is coming to taxis

Yellow cabs have never been known for cutting-edge technology. But starting Tuesday, about 7,000 of them will begin offering pooled rides in Manhattan through a partnership with Via, one of the venture capital-backed competitors of taxis. And over the coming weeks and months, the cabs’ ride-pool service will become available across all five boroughs through both Via’s mobile app and the taxi app Curb.

In addition to making cabs more affordable, the partnership could also make them more efficient while cutting down on the amount of time they spend looking for fares.

“We hope it will increase the overall earnings for the drivers,” said Jason Gross, global head of product and marketing for Verifone Taxi Systems, which operates the electronic payment systems in slightly more than half of New York’s yellow cabs. “And giving a competitively priced option […]
