Deliveroo loophole lets ‘substitute riders’ slip security checks for hygiene and criminal pasts

The takeaway delivery company has a strict vetting process for its own riders. However these riders are then allowed to take on ‘substitutes’ to do deliveries – and Deliveroo does not check who they are. A loophole in Deliveroo policy means some of the people making deliveries are unvetted and untrained The revelation came out during an ongoing employment tribunal against Deliveroo. The company is currently embroiled in a rights row over the status of its riders.

Campaigners have expressed disbelief at Deliveroo’s lack of checks. During the tribunal John Hendy QC, who is representing the IWGB trade union, said the lack of security checks was “unreal”.

He said: “This person has access to flats or apartment numbers… your substitute rider Mr X could be a convicted rapist or paedophile.” Deliveroo riders are normally strictly vetted for criminal convictions and have thorough training But Deliveroo believes it is a “reasonable expectation” that riders are to take responsibility for security checks on substitutes […]
